Iyana Briones, age 15, is the chairwoman of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians tribal youth council. She first joined the council at 14 years old. She said the youth council helps plan events for the tribal community. Briones said that being appointed as chairwoman was her greatest accomplishment this year. Young people often join join youth council in preparation for eventually joining the tribal council as adults.
Jeremiah Ramos, age 15, is a youth tribal council member. Ramos said he wanted to join the council because of the United National Indian Tribal Youth, or UNITY, trips involved. This year he got to attend the UNITY conference in Florida. Ramos aspires to eventually be elected to the general tribal council.
Edwin Muro is the vice chairman. Muro, also age 15, sees the youth council’s role as helping kids in the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Mission Indians.
